In 2019, we had 2 palm trees fall over. One palm tree fell into the street and fortunately did not hit anything. The second palm tree fell onto a townhouse roof which in addition to having the palm tree removed, the roof had to be repaired.
A tree company said the reason the palm trees fell down was they were diseased. They said the type of palm trees planted by the builder was very susceptible to disease. They said most of the palm trees have the disease and could fall down. Last year, we had them take down 20 of the tallest palm trees to protect the buildings.
In 2020, the HOA removed all the palm trees planted by the builder as part of phase 1 and phase 2 building construction. Many of these trees are above the unit roof lines. They brush up against the buildings and can cause damage to the stucco paint, windows and shutters. To protect the clubhouse and individuals in the pool area, we are having those palm trees removed also.
To trim these very tall palm trees, the landscaper needs to now rent a lift to safely get to the top. The HOA is responsible for paying the lift rental. Removal of these palm trees will protect our buildings from damage caused by palm trees that can fall over. Also the HOA will be saving the annual expense of the lift rental longer term.
Some of the palm trees are in a location that allow for a stump grinder to access the stump without damaging the existing ground bushes and vegetation. We are looking to have these stumps ground down where possible.
The palm trees planted as part of phase 3 will be removed in 2021. Again, tall palm trees that are diseased will be most likely removed. Also, the palm trees are a safety issue. Fortunately no residents or visitors have been hurt from the falling palm trees to date. By removing the palm trees we can avoid injury or damage from palm trees falling over.
